Low Voltage drivers have extreme variations between models makes, types, capabilities and country of origin. I recently ordered the 200W 24V Dimmable LED Driver with dimming capabilities to support a multiple LED COB strip DIY installation in a room of my house.What size driver do I need? Easy to determine, for example: The LED COB strips I am using draw 2.75 watts per foot, and I needed 56 feet to complete the project. Note at 244 Lumens per foot that produces 13,644 lumens for the room (dimmable) which allows for various mood settings through a dimmer. (these specifications are almost always on the package or sales material)To calculate the size of the driver, you need to multiply the watts/ft by the number of feet and add a 25% safety margin which is standard for electrical configurations. My calculations result in 154 watts total, plus a 25% margin or 192.5 watts which brings me to this 200W driver. To calculate amperage (load) just take the wattage (192.5) and divide it by the voltage (24V) to get the load Amps (8.0amp). This driver is rated at 8.5ampsI test all devices that I install to ensure the manufacturer has provided accurate specifications and my results for this transformer’s performance was equal to or greater that the advertised specifications making this transformer is perfect for my LED lighting project. I also test the heat factor when running transformers and drivers as they can get warm and need ample airspace to facilitate cooling. Note there are no fans or moving parts, so this driver relies on externally moving air to maintain safe operating temperature. Additionally, if you do install this in a location that cannot provide adequate cooling for the amount of power you are consuming, the protection circuitry will turn it off until it cools down and then will resume operation. I practical application, you would suspect this if your LED lights stopping working for a while and then mysteriously came back on later ;-)Overall, this 24V driver is a top-quality solution for dimmable LED lighting projects.It provides good performance at a very reasonable price.I will use this for multiple projectsPROS:• Quiet operation… this driver runs completely silent, which is ideal for bedrooms and media rooms where quiet is most desired. Note that magnetic drivers tend to hum or buzz, especially at lower dimming levels,• The 5-in-1 dimming flexibility is a huge plus. I tested it with both Lutron and Legrand dimmers with both LED strips and LED puck lights, and it worked flawlessly, giving me smooth, flicker-free dimming.• The TRIAC, 0-10V, 1-10V, 10V PWM, and RX options make it incredibly versatile, allowing it to integrate seamlessly into various setups without any compatibility issues (more for commercial use than home use but nice).• Great size (9.2” x 2.3” 1.2”) for tight locations.• UL and FCC-listed, gives peace of mind knowing it’s both safe and reliable putting in my house in locations that I don’t see every day (inside cabinets, on top of crown molding, etc.) as many drivers can get very hot.• Compact design is nice however, even though it will fit int a 4-gang electrical box, I would not recommend as there is little room for heat dissipation. The unit does get warm under full load.• Wiring connections are clear and simple to follow.• No flickering or dimming issues, even at the lowest levels, and it keeps the brightness steady throughout the entire range.• The build quality is excellent (so far)• Class 2 rating means it is designed for continuous, reliable operation without overheating and contains protection circuitry to guard against overloads and short circuits.• PriceCONS:• No instructions• The electrical leads are not hard to work with however, having electrical connectors on the unit eliminates a wire splice less than a foot away from the unit.A very easy five (5) stars for meNoteSome manufactures use the terms transformer and driver interchangeably and while they perform very similar functions, transformers change AC voltage levels, while a driver regulates and supplies the precise current or voltage needed for devices like LEDs lights or motors.Reviewers DisclaimerAll metrics and data readings are generated in a live workshop, not a lab and are provided as reference points for your evaluation.
