In the shop, if your wheel is off the bike, and you inadvertently squeeze the brake elver, you can use a multitude of tools to spread the caliper pistons. This item will help. However, I keep one in my car and one in my bike bag to be able to keep the pistons separated if I have to remove a wheel on the road to fix a flat, or removing the front wheel to put the bike in the back of the car.

These things are essential when transporting your bike with the front wheel removed! Great quality, fit perfectly, and are cheap enough to have spares on hand (since for some reason I loose these things all the time!) just in case.

If you are going to travel with your bike and remove your wheels for transport these pads are a necessity to keep your brakes properly aligned. I've used hotel room key cards in the past but these inserts are specific for the job. Inexpensive, great fit, and I don't have to use tape to keep them in place. If you are putting your bike in a travel case these are needed to ensure that the brakes do not get compressed during transit. Also helpful if the bike is being worked while on your bike repair stand and the wheels are removed. Prevents the accidental compression of the disc pistons. Saves time from having to use spreader tool if the brake levers are compressed during travel or repairs.
