This is one of the best softboxes I've ever used. Right when I picked it up, I felt the quality of materials that should lead to great durability. It was easy to set up and use.The quick release system is very easy and intuitive. If you've ever used the mini Bowens softvox for the Smallrig 100b and 60b lights, it's exactly like that.It came with diffusion and a grid. This was my one small gripe. The grid seemed about an inch too big in circumference. I have mild OCD and I couldn't get the grid to lay perfectly flat along the velcro lining without like a tiny hump at the end of running it. I tried twice and I had a second person lining it with me. Hardly a bug deal but and didn't effect my rating but yeah.It produced beautifully soft light. The dome itself is lightweight. Not as light as some others I have in a similar size but I guess thats to be expected with better build quality. And the bag it packs away into is cool also. Its a cylinder, but not only can't you open it from the top via a zipper, there's also a side zipper to open it all the way up. So you can just lay this into the bag rather than trying to shimmy it down a somewhat narrow tube.Overall I'm extremely pleased.

Not ideal for top-down lighting as the grid and main diffusion panel sag causing light spill due to the convex shape of the sag. Pointed horizontally it provides decent light control and the universal mount was my selling point for my accessories. Falls short on setup and storage, best if you dont have to collapse it or pack it away often. It takes a while to setup having to snap in every single rib, it's a bit heavy, not ideal to take on location and not very compact once it's collapsed and in the case.

OK… I’m loving the Amaran Light Dome 90 for a list of reasons. I’ve used it with a number of my LED lights, ranging from 40W to over 200W as well as with my Godox AD200 and AD100 Pro strobes. The quality of light it produces leaves nothing to be desired. And the fact that it includes a grid, something that can be a large additional expense with some softboxes, is a huge benefit. In fact, the cost-to-performance ratio can’t be ignored. This guy punches well above its weight, rivaling the performance of softboxes costing several times its price tag.But I’m also loving the ease of setting up and collapsing the Light Dome 9. I’ve put up with light boxes for years that had to be assembled from a bag of parts each time you wanted to use them. I hated putting those puppies together and taking them apart. The strength it required to bend those stiff metal rods to insert them into the holes around the perimeter of the Bowens mount was just crazy. I eventually resorted to leaving some of those older boxes assembled most of the time, greatly complicating storage and transporting them. While a Bowens mount is still a must for me, putting up with that inconvenience and waste of time is no longer required. Fortunately, an increasing number of manufacturers are offering light modifiers that open and close pretty easily. The Amaran Light Dome 90 is a breeze to open and close. While there are a few systems that open more like an umbrella, and some are a few seconds quicker to open and close, I feel like Amaran offers a stronger framework when opened than some of those others. In fact, the overall construction feels like a much more expensive product. Some of my first softboxes were constructed of a heavier material, but heavier is not always better, especially when mounting a good-sized softbox and light on a boom, or even when just toting gear to a shoot. The Amaran Light Dome achieves durable construction without adding unnecessary weight. It’s the perfect balance. The inner and outer diffusers attach quickly and effortlessly with hook-and-loop fabric. I have had softboxes that use little metal spring clips to attach the inner diffuser to fabric loops on the softbox’s inner wall. Those are a royal pain. The actual material used to attach the Light Dome’s outer diffuser is a type of velcro-esque material that I’ve not seen before. It offers all the gripping power needed, but is surprisingly narrow, leaving room for a more traditional wide Velcro-type strip around the included grid to attach to the inside of the Light Dome’s front edge.Once collapsed, the Light Dome slides easily into the slim (8” diameter), 30”-long cylindrical bag that zips open at one end and along the side. Everything packs away as quickly and easily as it slides out for use. The rugged carrying bag offers two integral straps that make it easy to carry. I’ve found I can slip my arm through both straps and easily carry the bag over my shoulder, freeing my hands to carry other gear. The Light Dome’s 90cm diameter is a great size for portraiture, podcasting and more. It is the size of box I most often grab as it meets so many needs. If I had to depend on one softbox diameter, it would be 90cm. The Amaran Light Dome 90 is deeper than some modifiers of the same diameter, however, which should be noted, as it limits how high you can raise the light in a room with low ceilings when you’re wanting to light a standing adult from slightly above. So, it’s no wonder I’m loving the Amaran Light Dome 90. It offers everything I need: great performance, ease of use, quality construction, Bowens mount compatibility and yes, even affordability! This thing earns an easy 5-star rating!

Amaran is known for their quality products so I definitely had high expectations for this 36" (3ft/190cm) circular Bowens Mount softbox. It arrived nicely packed in a box befitting the size, inside you found a case with the Bowens Expandable Softbox inside held together with a velcro strap and protected by two rubber end pieces, one to protect the clipping mechanism for the softbox, the other to protect the Bowens mount - an unexpected but nice to have for traveling. The base construction is all aluminum with aluminum quick-release locking clamps for each of the 16 expanding rods that expand the softbox. The toughest part of assembling the softbox is the pulling of each of the rods and locking them in place, which isn't that difficult after you figure out how much tension it takes to lock them into place. Once expanded it's easy to place onto your Bowens light. The inside is lined with a reflective surface and has velcro loops to attach the first of 2 diffusers to. The smaller diffuser is nicely packaged in the carry bag and is easily attached to the velcro loops located inside the diffuser. The larger diffuser, also nicely packaged in the carry bag then goes along the rim and is also attached via a velcro strip. Once placed, you then can decide if you want to attach the additional grid, also packaged in the bag. The grid is attached to the outside edge of the velcro strip that lines the outermost portion just inside the diffuser. Once you've attached the accessories you want for your light, you're ready for use whether for photo or video. When you've finished with the softbox, it's much easier to tear down; just remove all the velcro attachments and pack them away - I always snag a few ziplock bags place the diffusers and grid into them, and place them into the carry bag. I then remove the the softbox from the light and with the pinch-release quick-release locking mechanisms, I just pinch 8 times and the box is fully collapsed. Re-strap it, place it into the carry bag, and you're ready to go!Overall, it's an excellent 3-foot softbox that I will definitely be bringing with me on some of my location shoots. If you're in need of a 3' softbox, I recommend considering the Amaran Light Dome 90!

Amaran is a spinoff company from the Aputure brand family, and the level of quality is really showing through in this light modifier. The build quality is really exceptional and the price is VERY reasonable in my opinion for what you're getting. This 90cm size is what I would consider ideal for photography and videography work. As with many modern modifiers like this, it has double diffusion that can be removed if desired and comes with a grid to help direct the light. Both layers of diffusion and the grid are attached with quality velcro and hold very well.Setup is very easy. The ribs pop out and lock into place with a very satisfying click. I've come to enjoy the double diffusion setup, so I've left that installed and will add or remove the grid as needed. The modifier has a very well made bowens mount adapter collar that will fit on your video lights or your studio strobes. The brightness, the size, the great value for the price, all these things make this a VERY solid choice for a modifier. Great choice for photo or video work!
