This is actually quite a nice design. But it suffers from poor documentation.For one thing, the illustrations are similar but not exactly like the final product. So I will try to fill in the blanks.First of all, everything is very tightened down. You'll notice one knurled screw on the side of the barrel. That is for rotating the gobo once it has been inserted into the slot. You'll probably need a screwdriver to loosen the screw the first time, and in my case, it had been tightened down so hard that the screw had created burrs on the aluminum, preventing the barrel from rotating freely. These were no trouble to smooth down, as the aluminum channel is quite soft. I was able to rotate it freely after that--just be aware that this is not the most robust part of the design. Don't strip it, or you'll likely have to drill and tap a new hole. If you're careful with it, you'll be fine. Just don't overtighten it.The other confusing part of the design is the focusing adjustment. There is a chrome-colored retainer ring that allows you to place the little plastic color filters. But you'll notice that the knurled portion immediately below it actually screws out. THAT is your focus adjustment.There are other parts of the design that will screw apart, but those are not functional adjustments. They're just the way the device is put together. You won't need to bother with those unless you need to break it down for cleaning, in order to get to the internal lens elements.Once you've figured the thing out, it's actually very useable. I have several of these "cheap" gobo projectors. The nice Bowens ones will cost you plenty of $$$. These value-priced versions are usually less flexible in design. Some have a longer throw than is practical. This one is a shorter-throw, making it more useful in a smaller space.Overall, I will give it five stars. Primarily for value. Although it is by no means a perfect unit, it is considerably better than some competing ones I've seen. I like using these in interview lighting scenarios, where I want to project a window-light pattern on a background just for visual interest. And with an RGB lighting unit, particularly one with a set of effects, you can sometimes just use these to create a sharp or blurred spot of color.It's great to see useful lighting tools come down in price. That's good for photographers who are already struggling with profitability.
