I purchased both the Geomag 30-pc Starter set and the CVS Magnetics 108-pc Building Set at the same time, assuming they would work together. They do. Magnets are magnets, and they attract (or repel) other magnets no matter the brand. I'm happy with both products, and I hope they will help my 5 year old grandson develop his engineering skills. There are some differences between the two sets that I purchased, and I will note them in case it helps you when you are making your purchasing decision:GEOMAG 30-PC STARTER SET: Comes with 13 rods, 16 spheres, and 1 plastic platform. The rods are about 2 1/4" long. It comes with visual instructions for making 9 different sculptures, but 8 of the sculptures require more rods/spheres than are included in the set. With this set alone, there aren't many things you can build. The plastic platform is not very useful at all. The strength of the magnets is excellent. The spheres are steel, the rods are yellow and orange. It comes packed in cellophane in a thin cardboard box, not really good for storing the set once it's opened.CVS MAGNETICS 108-PC BUILDING SET: Comes with 66 rods and 42 spheres. The rods are about 1" long. It does not come with any instructions. The strength of the magnets is excellent. The spheres are steel, the rods are red and blue. It comes packed in a fitted case with storage for each rod and sphere, very good for keeping the set organized.PLAYTIME: The rods in the GEOMAG set were longer, but 2 of the CVS rods coupled with 1 sphere were about the same size as a GEOMAG rod, so we could easily mix them together. So, with the CVS set we could make 33 rods of the same size as the rods in the GEOMAG set. If you buy the 30-PC GEOMAG set, I'd recommend you buy other sets to go with it because there's not much you can build with only 30 pieces. The 108-PC CVS set provided many more building options. One thing we discovered is that if you try to make your sculptures too big, they became very unstable. The 1" rods seemed to hold out longer.END RESULT: We'd recommend the CVS set because the storage case is awesome, and the smaller rods add to the stability of the structure you're building (and help keep the kids from becoming frustrated when it keeps falling).

I bought this for a joined Christmas present for my 3 and 4 year old, not sure whether it was going to be a bust or something that they could really enjoy at such a young age. My 3 year old has a little trouble getting more complex structures built because of how strong the magnets are, but my 4 year old LOVES them. She has declared them her favorite toy of the holiday, and plays with them constantly. The magnets are of such great quality, and are built to last. Even though you are only given the little bars and the silver balls, the possibilities are endless. They come packaged great, so it's easy to tell if any pieces have gone missing. I would recommend this to anyone. More than just the average toy you find nowadays, where lights and sounds and flashy things replace quality and actual entertainment value!
