You really don't need to go beyond the vibrate on this unit...it's pretty powerful as a trainer. I suggest just using the vibrate as it's enough and it doesn't need to be tight around the dogs neck to be affective. Don't use the electric shock if you don't have to. You don't want your dog associating that pain if you don't have to.

Works really well for my chihuahua. I don't ever use the shock feature on it. Honestly never had the need to...well, only once, but never again. Crazy thing is, my chihuahua learned pretty quickly with the device on that when I click the audible beep, it means to either stop what you are doing wrong or get buzzed from the vibrate function, or come inside. If I needed to correct an action that I don't want him to do, I give him a quick buzz and he quickly stops. Only 1 time he was really excited and was ignoring my beep and vibrate triggers that I had to use the zap function...but the crazy thing is, ever since that day I refuse to use it. I had set it to level 1(lowest setting out of 8, and without the rubber covers...which I feel like I should of put on instead of direct metal studs) and he yelped loudly as if someone stepped on him by accident. Now, this wasn't a correction while interacting with another dog...this was against jumping on someone's leg as they are walking and almost causing an injury to both parties. One thing I was glad about is the adjustability of the collar. And you can trim it to size too. I was afraid there wasn't going to be any holes for the collar to fit my chihuahua, but there was. And the collar has a reflection strip for night use. The remote is very easy to use, the booklet does have instructions on the features and function...but it's pretty straight forward without it. Another feature I love is the charging cable it cones with. You can charge the collar AND remote with the single split cable it comes with. Now as for the distance, I have not yet been able to test that feature, but if it does function at the distance it mentions, I will feel at ease knowing I can try recalling with the audible beep if he is really far and within range. But as for now, I love how effective the device is with training...even though my 2 grown adult kids don't like it as they say it's inhumane, it's a great tool to use against stubborn dogs like my chihuahua.

Don't be afraid. These have three options; Tone, Vibrate, and Shock. We have easily been able to train our dogs using Tone or Vibrate on a setting lower that 3. You just need enough to get their attention, coupled with a verbal command. We own these, because two of our Jack Russells were fighting. These helped tremendously. They also helped stop them from barking at the neighbors and going nuts at the door anytime someone came home.Again, you do not need the shock feature unless it's necessary for extreme cases. If you do use it, keep the setting below 3, as that will be plenty, especially for smaller dogs.Be sure to test all three settings on yourself first, so you better understand what you're doing.

The collar started working intermittently after 8 months. After allowing it to dry out on the inside, it worked better. The recharge port is unfortunately not waterproof. Although our dog doesn't jump into dams, she runs outside when the grass is still wet after it rained. We will seal the recharge port after every recharge. Hopefully that will be enough to prevent further problems.
