CURT Trailer Balls
Tested for your safety.
A trailer ball may be one of the simplest components of your trailer hitch system, but it is also the direct connection between your vehicle and trailer. As such, a dependable trailer ball is vitally important.
Every CURT trailer ball is tested to meet U.S. VESC specifications for safety. Alongside our custom trailer hitches, multitude of ball mounts and heavy-duty towing products, our trailer balls are proven safe at our dedicated testing facility in Detroit, MI.
So, whether you’re towing a full-size travel trailer or a simple utility trailer, you can rest assured in the reliability of your CURT towing connection.
Three finishes available
Stainless steel
CURT stainless steel trailer balls are a premium option, offering superior rust resistance. They are available in various ball diameters and GTW capacities, and each one features fine threads for improved holding strength.
Chrome-plated
CURT chrome trailer balls are available in multiple diameters and GTW capacities, and like our stainless steel balls, they also feature fine threads. Their chrome finish over steel gives them solid resistance to rust and wear.
Raw steel
CURT trailer balls with a raw steel finish are intended for heavy-duty towing applications. They range in GTW capacity from 12,000 pounds to 30,000 pounds and feature a heat-treated construction for added wear resistance.

How to select a trailer ball
There are four key factors that must be considered when selecting a trailer ball for your towing setup.
1. Weight rating
2. Coupler size
3. Hole size
4. Platform thickness
To learn more about each of these factors, see the panel below. The diagram to the right shows the various measurements of a trailer ball, which may be referred to in the following sections.

1. Weight rating
Before selecting a trailer ball, it is important to know how much weight you’ll be towing. Each trailer balls is tested and rated to certain gross trailer weight capacity and tongue weight capacity. The gross trailer weight is the total weight of the trailer, while the tongue weight is the weight specifically at the coupling point.
Remember, your towing capacity is always limited by the lowest-rated towing component, whether that’s the vehicle, the trailer hitch or the trailer ball.

2. Coupler size
The second important factor to consider is the size of your trailer coupler. Many couplers are adjustable, but only within a limited range.
When selecting a trailer ball, choose one with a ball diameter that matches the coupler size. It is extremely dangerous to attempt to tow without a matching trailer ball and coupler.

3. Hole size
"Hole size" refers to the diameter of the mounting hole into which the trailer ball shank is inserted. The diameter of the hole must be no more than 1/16” larger than the diameter of the shank.
If you already own a ball mount or bumper with a mounting hole that is too larger, you may be able to make up the difference using a CURT reducer bushing of the appropriate size.

4. Platform thickness
The thickness of the mounting structure is also vitally important, whether that mounting structure is a CURT ball mount, fixed-tongue trailer hitch or a bumper. The platform must be at least 3/8” thick to be considered safe for towing.
If the mounting platform is too thick, CURT trailer balls are available with a variety of shank lengths, including up to 3 1/2".

Patented design
A Switch Ball trailer ball uses a patented J-groove design to allow multiple ball sizes to be mounted on the same trailer ball shank.
Fast, easy installation
A Switch Ball trailer ball attaches easily with no tools, coins or pins required. The ball simply twists on, and you're ready to tow.
Secure towing
Once installed, the Switch Ball shank bears the trailer's tongue weight, taking stress off the ball and allowing for free movement.
