The filters are as efficient as higher priced “brand” filters

I have a new furnace to get filters for and had prior gotten some from Home Depot (FPR 5) and Lowes (MERV 5). This one is a MERV 8. Apparently that is comparable to a Home Depot FPR 5.Very confusing trying to figure out what kind to get.MERV numbers are used more commonly: the higher the number the more stuff it filters out. Of course the price also increases as well.This is what I found on the web:MERV 1-4: Basic Filtration: Captures large particles like dust mites, pollen and carpet fibersMERV 5-8: Improved Filtration for better air quality: Residential and commercial buildings: Captures mold spores, pet dander and dust mite debrisMERV 9-12: Superior Filtration: Homes with pets or allergies, commercial buildings or industrial workplaces: Captures lead dust, humidifier dust and auto emissions.There is more, but enough to categorize this filter.Given I have used a MERV 5 prior as well as an equivalent to a MERV 8, I have not yet noticed the difference and as you can see, they lump the MERV 5-8 in the same category. So my assumption is that they are close, but the 8 is a little bit better.There is also another consideration is how structurally sound the filter is itself. My furnace is a bit odd in how it loads a filter and it is snug. If the filter is floppy, it does not slide in well. This one had a nice structure to it and slid in easily. Also nice to get 4 in a box, so you can store them securely. Minor concern, but it helps.

Anyone with central air knows that filters can be expensive. I decided to give these a try and see if there really was a difference between the "name brand" filters or something else. These have been working great so far. There hasn't been any noticeable difference in air quality which is what you want when you move from a name brand. These are MERV8 so the filtration is good. I also like that the frame is just sturdy enough for the job. They slide in easily and hold it's shape. I haven't noticed any smells or performance issues so far so I can say these are a decent option. Good buy.

These are good filters. Fit into the furnace well. Ran it for the first time a couple of days ago and worked well. These are not HEPA filters, but they are a good mid-quality filter.
