The metal step-on mechanism is faulty and doesn't work. I followed instructions and tried to get the lid to lift with that dumb metal lifter, connected to the step-toe pedal. I followed directions, placed exactly where they said to place it, before opefating and it still didn't work. It looks like an engineering defect. The lid seems too big and mis-shaped for a small metal rod to push it up and open. I also think it's an manufacturing defect because I bought this same trash can a few months ago and sent it to my parent's home. Same defect. I was more upset because I wasn't informed of the defect, of my parent's trash can unit I bought for them, until after the return deadline.The perfect replacement I bought was a similar, 111.9 gallon, white kitchen trash can for $20 made by Sterilit. Better look, very sturdy and well made, durable and functional step-toe mechanism. Get this Sterilite brand instead. Fits with standard 13 gallon trash bags well.

Unfortunately, the foot pedal mechanism failed after just 3 days of use.
