The pastels were unusable as they were mushed together and in complete disarray. Several were loose in the package. The delivery date was delayed over 10 days. Arrived by DHL and not Fed Ex.

I enjoyed working with oil pastels as a teenager but they've never really been a fashionable medium, which is ridiculous because they're the most satisfying, quickest way to produce gorgeous works that feel like fine art. I recently got back into them and ordered this largest Holbein Academics set after sampling a few brands via Sketchbox. These aren't as decadently soft as Senneliers, but that's a good thing, especially if you're using the two brands in tandem. The Academics are better for sketching and definition, IMO, tho you can also use them to complete an entire work on their own as I did for the apple painting attached here. I also prefer the Academics to Holbein's Artist line because the Artist does not come with the handy paper wrap. I'm sure professional artists will have different opinions, but these are my go-to basic oil pastel. The set of 48 is relatively affordable and comes in an excellent variety of colors. You can also buy individual sticks to replace ones you use up as needed.
