This is a well made piece of equipment. I'm sure that it will last for decades. The hand pump works really well and is capable of shooting a stream of water at least 25', or you can switch to the other integrated brass nozzle and it shoots a good spread of water about 6' away. I'm 64 Y.O. 5'-8" tall, about 165 lbs. I'm pretty fit and strong for my age and size. It's not easy to lift it off of the ground and put it on my back when it's full of water. I can do it, but it's a struggle. When carrying it on my back when it's full it's quite heavy. I used it yesterday. I was doing fire mitigation, burning dead trees and bushes on a relatively steep hill. I had to be very care how and where I stepped in order to not slip or fall carrying the heavy load. Fortunately, I didn't need to use the pump, so when I was finished, I carried it with a full tank back up the hill. Next time I'll dump the water before walking back up the hill. Overall, I'm happy with my purchase, as it allows me to clear dead wood and burn it where it is instead of dragging it to my usual burn spot.

The metal version of this product was always ready for use at Scout camp bonfires more than 50 years ago. I was pleased to see they still make this product. (Made in U.S.A.!) I was tempted to purchase the metal version because it’s so “old school “ but the plastic tank was lower cost and can’t dent or rust. This version also has a hip belt which the metal versions do not. The solid brass pump is a work of art and just feels satisfying to use. Feels like a quality product. Service parts are available too. This thing should last forever. I now have a quality tool to fight a wildfire until the fire department arrives.

So, there is nothing wrong with this device except there a re a few things you should know. First, 5 gallons of water equals about 40lbs. Filling it is no problem, lifting onto your shoulders is not realistic for most people. If it was on a stand while being filled, fine. It is still 40 lbs that you have to lug around in a high stress situation. Second, while this hand pump works fine, it is barely enough to do very minor spot fire (small ember) work. Like throwing a cup of water on a fire each time you pump. Add to this the extensive effort required to pump repeatedly in a high stress situation, it is not realistic for most people. Third, this will have a limited effect in only a small area. You will only be able to squirt at small fires and that is about all. One thing that could improve this: a battery operated pump = more water output, and less effort hand pumping. You would go through water faster and have to run down to refill in a high stress situation, but it will put out larger fire sources. Will it have an overall effect on home wildfire defense... minimal at best is what I am thinking, but maybe that will matter, maybe it wont. It is not a realistic firefighting tool for most people. I would put my money on a gas powered fire pump, good quality 1" hose, nozzle, and valid water source. Or a designated sprinkler system. Or just a long garden hose. It is a fun toy though, and looks the part, but I will be trying something else that may really work well.

It sprays about 20 feet which will hopefully be enough if I ever need to put out a fire .

This has allowed me to get more sleep.Wait, what? Sleep? Well, yes: There was a brush fire on the hillside behind the house. The firetrucks showed up, put it out. The next night, it flared up again from hot spots. The firetrucks showed up again, put it out again. Night after that, it flared up again from hot spots. The firetrucks showed up yet again, put it out yet again. The next night, my new Indian Pump had arrived. We loaded it up and, using an IR camera that plugs into my phone, we tracked down and soaked the hot spots. No firetrucks showed up. Got a good night's sleep for the first time all week. This works very well. I like it considerably better than the metal ones I've used in the past, as those clang every time you bump into a tree, and are prone to getting dented. In general, I'm in favor of plastic for anything that's likely to be wet. The pump unit is extremely good; just be sure you have it all properly tightened up before use or it will suck air and be less effective. We can get about a 20'-30' stream from this, by the way, depending on vigor of pumping. "Light," of course, is a relative term -- no matter what you do, you're still carrying around 40 pounds of water. But at least you're not carrying around quite as much weight for the tank itself. Another nice feature that the metal ones I remember didn't have: there's a thing to hook the pump onto so you can have your hands free for scrambling around hillsides, etc.
