My go-to for mechanical pencils. I've been using them for 10+ years and have yet to find something better.

These Pentel drafting pencils are nicely done. They have the standard thin metal barrel and a cap on the eraser. I do love that the cap has a bump on the top so you can easily remove it. Major improvement there. The .7 lead is standard width. The reason for 1 star off is that both my sister and I separately experienced the barrel unscrewing, but you don't realize it and you think the lead is used up but you can't get it to come out to let the new piece come through. You need to screw the barrel back in and all is fine but it's definitely weird, and that it happened to both of us.Also, for the price I'd hope they'd come with a few extra pieces of lead. Each only comes with 1 spare piece in the barrel.

The project managers in my office love these for marking up documents and drawings. They make perfect fine lines and I haven't heard any complaints about smudging.

What can I say except this wasn't my first rodeo with the Pentel GraphGear 500. As an avid journal writer and hobby artist, I have a wide selection of pencils in my arsenal, and I genuinely enjoy using them. However, time and again, I find myself wanting to write or sketch with my GraphGear 500. I absolutely LOVE this pencil and I own multiples in 0.5mm, 0.7mm and 0.9mm. They even have a 0.3mm, but I've never used a mechanical pencil lead in that size. However, I think that the 0.7mm is the goldilocks size. The grip and the metal point shield are the main selling points of this pencil for me. The grip has the most comfortable and secure feel in my hand and improves my linework accuracy while the lead sheath/shield seems to protect the lead from breaking. In fact, the only time I break a lead is if I drop the pencil while the lead is advanced.I also enjoy the quality of the Pentel HB leads that come with this pencil by default. They are the perfect moderate hardness and allow you to sketch with light or heavy pressure, providing a wide range of tone. They also offer a sharpness without feeling scratchy and are comfortable to take notes with for long periods in combination with the body of the GraphGear 500. Honestly, I could purge every other pencil, including wood cased, in my collection and be satisfied with using only this model for the rest of my artistic life, and this particular set of 4 is currently a phenomenal deal at this price. I generally spend about $5 bucks per pencil when I buy these open stock, so the list price as of this review is less than that and is, therefore, a great deal.

Everyone knows how great these drafting pencils. What else can be said? I have the more expensive version with metal casing and bought these as backup when i can’t find it.
