These are hands down...the best mechanical pencils for the money!I got my original one back in the 80's (still works perfectly) and now that my daughter is drawing regularly too...I wanted to have more of these on hand. When you're drawing detailed areas of your picture and need more lead...it is a huge advantage to not have to readjust your grip to advance the lead...simply give it a couple shakes and you're good to go! It's very responsive...one shake advances the lead just as one click would. It also advances, just as other pencils, with an actual click on the eraser end.You won't be disappointed!

I recently stumbled 'back' across these pencils after remembering that it was my favorite during grade school. Nostalgic it may have been, though these are the best mechanical pencils that you can buy -- subjectively of course. The reason for the latter statement is because of the quality and function of the pencil. While most mechanical pencils all, roughly, function the same, this has a dual function where most have only one. Firstly, it may appear to be a gimmick, however you quickly notice it is not. The latter is referring to 'The Shaker'. This pencil operates in two ways:1. Click the top to push out the lead, just like all other pencils.2. 'The Shaker' -- you shake the pencil, and the lead comes out.The shaker mechanism works, and does not break down over time. There are many ways in which the shaker function could not perform correctly -- as in pushing out too much lead each time so that you really never can get a precise read on how much, or how little, to shake the pencil, among others. Each shake pushes the lead forward just a bit, and you usually end up shaking it a couple of times -- easy to master after a few tries. A little noise is produced (more so than just a normal click), however it is a function you will probably end using the majority of the time because it is easier to shake the pencil rather than use your thumb to push down. All functions aside, this is also a very well made pencil -- the casing is a slick black, the pencil clasp is metal, and the rubber grip has a near perfect grip -- not too dry or too slippery. Not to mention the pencil looks very appealing. For school, for work, for anything that uses a pencil -- this is one that you likely haven't heard of but is superior to almost all you will find in a store.

These pencils have a little weight to them making them perfect to hold and wrote with. I understand d why they are called "The Shaker" now. There is a small piece of metal tubing inside where the lead barrel goes that moves when the pencil is tilted. The clicker is also very easy to push on, there is not much needed force and they write great. Very pleased with this purchase. I bought these as they were more affordable than the Zebra brand mechanical pencils I usually buy. These are just as great, maybe even better. The eraser size is perfect and I love the look and design of the pencil itself.

Really, really nice for a budget mechanical pencil, and - yes, I know this is completely ridiculous - I've tried an awful lot of pencils. With the H-305, between the smooth, high-gloss barrel, the width, the grip, the weight - it all adds up to a pencil that just feels very right in my hand, and which I already greatly prefer to a lot of pencils I own that cost me ten to twenty times as much apiece. (Since I'm not doing drafting work, I find that just by feel, I actually like the H-305 a lot better than the drafting models in the Shaker lineup, which I've also tried a bit too.)Jury's still out on the shaker feature itself. It does seem to work fine, although I'll personally prefer just clicking the top the way I always have; I notice that I don't always end up with as much lead advance shaking vs. clicking, and reaching up with my thumb to click for more lead doesn't really kill my "productivity" anyway. But I do really like the added weight that the shaker adds to these pencils, for some reason.Although I particularly love the all-black look (very classy - wait, am I seriously expounding upon pencil aesthetics?), I'm hoping someone on Amazon will someday offer up the white H-305 too. I've only seen pictures of white H-305s on the Internet, but they also look very nice to me. Yes, I have gone searching for background information on this pencil. Yes, I think I may have a problem.
