I have been using Synology for the best part of a decade, with an occasional QNAP sprinkled in, so had a preference for Synology but believed the two were similar enough to give QNAP a try.The specs I was looking for were not available in a Synology for anywhere near the price point of this QNAP; 9 bays, U.2/M.2 capability, decent Zen CPU, ZFS with the QuTS Hero OS option, native 2.5/10Gbit networking, et-al..I don't want to give this item a 1-star review since the hardware itself in my opinion is excellent, but when the software is buggy, and support is abysmal, that is what locks this score to 1 star for me. It doesn't matter how good the hardware is if you're putting data at risk because of half-baked updates, and ineffective, extremely slow responding support. At this time of writing, the QTS 5.0 OS has been out for 2 months, and has had 8 releases, most of which have been pulled shortly after release. It appears the QA process has been offloaded to the users. Reading the individuals trying to help each other in the absence of effective support in the r/qnap forum, and reviews on TrustPilot, this looks to be the same for every major release.I have personally lost data, have been told the LUN import/export isn't supported between QTS and QuTS, despite the documentation reaffirming that exports are portable to 'any QNAP'. I Have replied to support pointing this out and suggested they change their wording, to have been met with silence.Have raised 3 support tickets, two of which I've had to solve myself, the third I've had a single reply over a day ago asking 'is this related to another ticket', it was not, and (I think) that is clear if someone actually read the ticket. Since replying back within 20 minutes, it has been another day without an update, and that's only the initial response to the ticket, no investigation or logs have been looked at yet..The TrustPilot review score of 1.7 echoes these statements. So to anyone reading this? Yes, the hardware is well worth the price, and if you're a more advanced user who is going to install their own OS, such as truenas or unraid, then absolutely go for it. But, if you're going to buy this and use the intended QNAP operating system (QTS/QuTS), I would recommend giving QNAP a miss, and look at something like Synology or other similar units, it's just not worth the risk. Their approach to major releases and lacklustre support appear to be a pattern, and not one you want to invest your time or data into.
