I really was expecting this filter to be a little more powerful. I have another brand rated at the same capacity that honestly puts out way more volume. Not sure why that is, but I just put this one on a smaller tank. Very quiet, not too big, and came with most of what I needed.

You get what you pay for. I purchased a Sun Sun HW-402B canister filter with UV. I purchased the 402B because of the built in UV light and cost. The hose is 5/8 inch inside diameter. The reviews pointed out the water flow were low and they were correct. I have no way to measure the flow but it is about the same as my 160 GPH canister filter, no way it is 265 GPH as advertised and would not work very well on an aquarium bigger than 30 Gallons. It is noisy; you can hear it from across the room not quite like my other filters. I do like the built in skimmer on the intake tube, the price and UV light. I have 3 canister filters one is 5 years old, all working great and quite. I will cross my fingers and see how long it will last, I have it on my 20 gal tank.

So I timed it. It takes 8 seconds constantly to pump 1 liter out. You can break down the math your self if you like but it actually only pumps 450lph / 119ghp. I did this test with a pyrex liquid measuring cup and my phone's stop watch. So after getting the same results with/wo media and hose attachments and so on. I'm confident in my findings. With that said, the quality of the pump it's self is not bad and the tubing is nice but the plastic hose ends for intake and outtake are super terrible. Without something to seal the pieces properly they will suck in air and leak out water where they are not supposed too. All of this will happen in your tank not on the floor but it is not what I expected either.I debated with my wife for hours if I should return it or not, just to get a higher flow and honestly after the thought of the hassle, I'll just give it a try. You want to cycle your fish tank water 4-7 times per hour with a filter and since this is going on my 30g tank, it will achieve the minimum 4x per hour.I used to have a fluval 406 on my 75g, so I am familiar with the pressure that pump shot out water and immediately I could tell this was no where close to it.I would purchase this again, but! Now knowing to expect 1/2 of the advertised gph, I would buy a better version. I wouldn't buy any of this brand's products for anything larger then a 50g tank as the gph would not be enough even in the most expensive version. Assuming they are all labeled 2x the actual gph flow rate, like this product is.

I've only had this a few weeks,if anything changes I'll update the review but I'm beyond pleased with it. Set up was simple and took about 15 minute. The priming system worked perfectly. The associated parts for the filter were bagged together so it was easy to tell which parts went together. ran it with the original power filter for the first two weeks, have removed the power filter for the last week. It's running on a single species puffer tank, so heavy feeding carnivore. The tank is crystal clear now,the water parameters are perfect for this tank. No ammonia,no nitrates,50% weekly water changes keep nitrates down. I'm extremely happy with my purchase.June of 2016. Flow has slowed a bit but still love this filter. Water quality is great and water is crystal clear even if I skip a few water changes. Bought another one for different tank.

I bought this to use in a planted Fluval Edge nano tank. This was one of the lowest GPH external canister filters I could find. I was worried about the GPH and ending up with a tank that resembled a washing machine due to the high water flow. I used shower/bath puffs in the top trays for my biological media along with the included prefilter pad in the lowest tray. My small tank, shrimp, and plants have no trouble with the water flow. The long spray bar helps diffuse the current which I have pointing towards the top of the tank. If I used this on a larger tank (55 gallon +), I would be disappointed in the amount of water it moves. Although, running different media than my bath puffs may improve water flow. The quick release hose attachment works very well. A couple drips from each hose is the most I have had when taking the hose out.The intake and spray bar plastic is a bit lightweight. Had to be careful while assembling, they felt as if they would crush. Once together, they do the job.I found the priming pump to work very will if the filter is at least half full of water. Once it's full and running, I turn the filter on its sides as best I can to remove and extra air.I've had green water algae breakouts in other tanks so the addition of a UV light may be a plus. The light is on the smaller side for a large tank I feel. But for my Fluval Edge it should be perfect if needed. A pack of two replacement bulbs can be had for under $8 shipped on ebay.
