This is a new version of the very popular BAOFENG FRS Radio series, featuring the normal 22 FRS channels, as well as 12 NOAA channels, dual-channel monitoring, voice activated transmit (VOX), tone-coding (CTCSS and DCS), and both channel and code scanning. All selectable from the menu system.The included 1400 mAh Li-Ion battery pack can be charged via the Type-C USB port, or exchanged for either three NiMh AA rechargeable or AA alkaline cells. In addition, a USB pig-tailed charge cable is included so that you can charge two radios simultaneously.The radios are boxed with two radios each, including belt clips, lanyards, two 1400 mAh rechargeable batteries, a single dual USB charge cable. You will have to provide your own wall charger. With this purchase, you receive two boxes for a total of four radios with the mentioned accessories.Radio features include a side-lit LCD screen and a push-button front panel to access the operating features, like battery status, menu settings, channel selection, volume, power on/off, etc. Additional features include NOAA weather band reception and a built-in flash light.While I like the radios, I found the menu a bit challenging. The screen display is not intuitive, with every press of the Menu button the display information is abbreviated and the subject of the particular menu appears at different locations on the little screen and not always at the same size. I initially found that confusing so read the manual thoroughly.The instruction manual with it’s ultra-small printing is a difficult at best and you need a magnifying glass. Worse is that it’s over-written and vague. For example, to activate the built-in flash light, the Step 7 instruction located on page 7, took 71 words, telling you to “press [—] button (they show you a small icon of a flashlight that is difficult to distinguish. That icon does not exist on any of the radio’s buttons! However, on page two there is a legend for the illustration on page 1, item 30 is the left side lower button to activate the flashlight!To simplify, all that needs to be said, is that the flashlight button is located on the left side, below the PTT button. Press it once to turn on the light, press twice to make it blink, press again to turn it off. (20 words instead of 71, and the light does not blink an SOS, it just flashes on and off.)To best understand the menu system, there is a diagram on page 9 that illustrates the steps through the menu system. With each press of the menu button you advance through the selections.For example, press menu once you get the Channel, press Menu again to move to Sub Code, and again for VOX, followed by Call Tone, SOS Code, Beep, Roger, and then Dual Watch. Another press of the menu button returns you to the beginning. If you hesitate more than a few seconds, the Menu goes back to the beginning and you have to start over.With each Menu item, you can make changes, by pressing the up and down arrows. For example, if you want to turn off that annoying beep every time you press a key, you would press Menu five times until ‘bP’ appears on the screen; then without much hesitation, you press an arrow key until ‘oF’ appears. The ‘beep’ is now turned off.Confusing is that the particular feature identification is not consistant in either size or location on the screen. Sometimes the identifying abbreviation is large and centered, and other times not. Sometimes it’s even a tiny graphic located somewhere else on the screen.To familiarize yourself, check the diagram on page 9, read the description of that menu feature and the explanations for the selections. Then spend a few minutes stepping through the menu and selections for each.In my opinion, the instructions are more complex that they should be. I have an Extra Class Amateur Radio license, and have been writing and illustrating technical manuals for almost fifty years; this should not have been that challenging. Remember, the FRS service is for everyday people and their families, and I think the instructions should be written for that audience.Bottom line is that while I like this FRS radio model, the instructions are not clear, and frankly way more confusing than should be!

Ok, nice little concept from a company that makes really good radios. I’ve had Baofeng shortwave radios that just blow it out of the park. I haven’t yet received a broadcast from the weather channel, but I believe it is because it can be hard to get out here sometimes, but it DOES lock in on the station, so I know it will receive a transmission just fine. I picked up my wife down the street using the wallow talkie feature fine, and it’s a pretty long street. Good there! Carries in a coat pocket fine. The scan feature is great. The winner about these to me is the fact that they can be powered by either three AAA batteries, or the included rechargeable batteries via the radio itself. This is a nice option to have for an emergency communication device that can also be used as an emergency radio to get the weather band, which you WILL want in case of a real emergency, storm, ect. So many rechargeable radios can’t do this, and if you run out of battery power a few extra AAA batteries can save you in a pinch. READ THE DIRECTIONS included in the two box they ship in! These are a pretty good thing to have handy, especially these days. P.S. the different colors for each radio is a nice feature for identifying who’s radio is who’s!

These are just fine to use in closer range. We found at 1/3.of a mile away they get pretty static sounding. When the radio is not in use but on, we will got a bit of static and random times. Simple to use. Love that each walkie talkies is a different color. Not too heavy..can fit in an oversized pocket

I own a high-end pair of their two-way radios and I absolutely love them. But these FRS (Family Radio Service) walkie talkies, while not “high end,” are high quality and loads of fun in their own right. They’re quite easy to operate, but, if using them intimidates you in any way, they come with a well-written, detailed Owner’s Manual.I got these for when our grandkids visit, especially because we do a lot of hiking. But we’ve also discovered that they’re very handy around the house at times when needing to communicate with my elderly mother-in-law. She’s sedentary most of the time, and, for example, if I’m out in my workshop and/or my wife is outside tending to her flower beds, my mother-in-law can easily and conveniently call us with just the push of a button on the BAOFENG’s.As I would expect from this company, the walkie talkies are very well made, and are durable, rugged and weather resistant—with an IPX7 rating (meaning they’re completely waterproof). They’re also compact and relatively light. As far as reception is concerned, these walkie talkies put out a very strong signal such that you can communicate up to 3 miles away in open expanses, or up to .5 - 1 mile in neighborhoods or other “obstructed” areas. And best of all, you’ll appreciate how clear and sensitive your communications are, even in harsh conditions.As you can no doubt tell, I highly recommend these BAOFENG walkie talkies. At their very reasonable price point, a pack of 4 is only just over $14 per walkie talkie—a great bargain in my view for good quality two-way radios. And I haven’t even mentioned how with each unit you can easily and quickly scan 12 NOAA weather channels for instant weather updates. And how each walkie talkie has a built-in flashlight! All in all, they’re a GREAT value and loads of fun. And don’t forget how they could be vital in times of emergency. The list goes on… lol
