This Westinghouse ¼ HP Pool-Cover Pump can handle anything with at least 2 inches of water– ponds, rain barrels, fountains, flooded basements. The pump starts automatically when placed in a couple of inches of water; it stops automatically when the water depth drops to ¾ inch. I wish it could go all the way to completely empty, but ¾” of water at the lowest spot isn’t too much trouble to pour out, or to mop up with a sponge. The pump needs to have water to seal the shaft, and can be damaged without water, so it will stop itself when not enough water is available. Using water instead of oil helps to not contaminate the water, I think.Any ¾” garden hose can be attached to the discharge outlet’s check valve. Or, for faster flow, a 1.25” sump pump discharge hose can be attached. The attached heavy-duty cord is 25 feet long and is grounded (i.e. has 3-prong plug). Lowering the pump by its cord could stress the cord and damage it, so I'm going to use a 25-foot nylon rope to position and move the pump instead. The rope is included.I checked the manual online before ordering, and it answered a lot of my technical questions in advance. To find the manual yourself, go to the Westinghouse website, search for “WHPCP”, click the product page for “1/4 HP Automatic Pool Cover Pump”, scroll down and click “Downloads”, then click the manual “Download” button.Pumps are handy to have around for emergencies. I'm glad I ordered this one.

I got this for my parents' in-ground pool and their traditional vinyl cover that fills up with water every winter. My father always uses a garden hose to siphon water out, but this can take forever without any assistance from a pump. He was worried about just throwing the pump directly onto the cover because of the weight, so he suspended it using some rope attached to a long pole that leans over the pool. It looks precarious, but it made quick work of a full cover from a heavy rain. He was afraid to let it run dry, so he shut it off beforehand, but the water siphoned the rest of the way out overnight. Overall we've been super happy with its performance.

The Westinghouse 2-in-1 Utility Pump is an absolute lifesaver! Its dual functionality as a submersible and non-submersible pump makes it incredibly versatile. I’ve used it for everything from draining my pool to handling a minor basement flood, and it performs flawlessly every time. The 1600 GPH capacity is impressive for quick results, and the 950 GPH in non-submersible mode is perfect for smaller tasks like emptying aquariums. It’s easy to set up, durable, and compact enough for convenient storage. This pump is a must-have for homeowners looking for a reliable and efficient water transfer solution!

Using this just as the product is described to keep water from building up on my above-ground pool cover.Set-up just takes a couple of minutes and the base is nice and wide for a stable positioning on top of the pool cover. The automatic float is what drew me to this pump and it does work well. However, I am experiencing it turning on when a small pool of water is trapped at its base. (Just woke up this morning and heard it running when it didn't need to be since there was no water for it to move) To be fair, my pool cover is not taught, which could be part of the reason for this. To prevent this from happening and shortening the pump's life, I'm going to leave it tipped on it's side (away from the float) until I see water accumulating or have impending rain because the outlet is not easily accessible. The main highlight is how quiet this pump runs! The manufacturer got this one right as you can barely hear it running when your next to it! Definitely better than my other pump!

Right off the bat, I couldn't get this working very good when attempting to drain the remaining water in our hot tub after first having drain the bulk of it through the drain plug hole on bottom of said hot tub. I thought the pump was defective or just really not performing well... Until, I actually read the directions and unlike some other similar pumps I've had, this one requires you to first prime the pump with water by an access port. After doing so, the water started flowing freely, with good pressure. This pump is on the small side, but seems pretty decent flow rate. Like I said my hot tub has a drain plug on the bottom but then there's a lot of residual water left in the seat bottoms and the floor area and the only way to get it out is with a sump pump. Pump itself is built well, plastic and metal parts, fairly lightweight for its size, but put together well. It's pretty straightforward, I have a section of a garden hose I hooked up this pump using the included adapters, you can hook up various size hoses. Works as it should, I don't see why it wouldn't last, it's made well by reputable company. I think it's a tad expensive for what it is so I'm deducting one star.
