Good Maintenance Practices

Handle belts with care

Do not use belt dressings to stop belt slippage or noise. These are oil based and may cause belt deterioration.

Never twist a belt more than 90 degrees during inspection. This may damage the tensile cords and cause premature failure.

Replace belts regularly

Replace serpentine belts every 60,000 – 100,000 miles. Check vehicle’s owner’s manual.

Replace V-belts after 3 to 4 years, or every 36,000 to 48,000 miles.

Use an approved tension gauge to check belt tension.

Check belt tension

Use an approved tension gauge to check belt tension.

Check for proper belt tension after 500 to 1,000 miles following belt installation. Recheck often, at least twice a year or every 6,000 miles.

Signs of Wear and Troubleshooting

Signs your v-ribbed belt is worn may include:

Rubber Loss: (most common belt wear) a belt wear gauge measures rubber loss, which can result in reduced power transfer from the crank to the accessories.

Glazing: shiny spots can indicate a slipping belt that isn’t properly transferring power to accessories.

Pilling: worn rubber can fill in grooves and cause noise, heat, vibration, and excessive wear.

Abrasion: wear along the side could indicate misalignment due to a failed tensioner.

Cracking: older neoprene belts crack as they near the end of their life cycle and often need to be replaced.

Engine stops or backfires.

The belt is producing a squealing noise.

Headlights dim while driving.

Loss of battery charge.

FAQs

Q: Can I use the same automotive belt for multiple uses?

A: No, use the belt in the way it’s listed in the ACDelco belts and hoses catalog.

Q: Will a worn automotive belt affect gas mileage?

A: No, remember the leading cause of belt failure is improper tension and misaligned pulleys. Improper tension will cause the belt to slip and you may notice a loss of performance from the air conditioning system as well as increased heat under the hood. High heat can lead to premature accessory failure.

The drive belt on my 2010 tahoe with the 5.3L was making screeching noises already and decided to change it. Noticed the ac belt also had a bit of cracking and the grooves were thin from the wear. This belt is perfect fit as it’s OEM. Installation was easy without the required tool after watching a quick video on youtube where you rotate the engine. It was on in less than 3 mins. Working 100% and for the cost it’s worth it!P.s - if you decide to do it like the youtube video and rotate your engine, the socket is a 24mm (15/16).

Perfect replacement for my '09 Escalade. Must remove serpentine belt to install (easy) and can be installed using the zip tie method as seen on YouTube however takes a good deal of strength and leverage to install using this method.

Works on 2011 Tahoe LT 5.3L.Use a large ziptie around crank pulley to hold it on, then slowly turn crank pulley with breaker bar until the belt fully seats.

I didn't use an install tool. I just used a socket to turn the engine over to get this stretch-fit belt to stretch and fit. The professional belts are are thicker and last longer. I've only had great experiences with them. One thing: you may find that the partnumber for this belt is different from the one installed. Make sure to cross reference to verify before you install, especially since its stretch-fit.
