I purchased this 3 months ago and installed it as the first of a 2-stage under sink filter with the main intent of softening the water I use for my Breville Touch espresso machine. (The second stage is a 3M Filtrite filter.) I decided to run it for a while before concluding whether it worked for that purpose. It turns out that it softens my very hard water so well that I now have to mix a little hard, unfiltered water into my Breville to make that work correctly. That is, the filter does its job darned near perfectly. And that created a perplexing problem.First, what's up with my Breville. Espresso machines like this Breville are very sensitive to hard water scale. I actually ruined my prior Breville, a less sensitive machine, after 8 years of slow buildup from my hard water and my inadequate descaling. I could no longer get enough water to run through it to descale it. When I learned that my new machine was even more sensitive to this problem, I took up the challenge to address it and, because it will be very difficult to get a water softener installed in my house, came up with this under-sink solution. After using the softening cartridge for 3 months, my Breville stopped working properly. Working with Breville tech support, I did some very aggressive descaling, which helped address part of my problem, but not another. Working further with Breville, the tech suggested I add a little (I added 1/4) tap water to my softened water. Voila, the problem went away. The problem was that the water sensors within the machine use conductivity to detect the water. Using this filter, my water is apparently just a little too soft, has a little too low conductivity, for the sensors to detect the water. If you have a less electronic espresso machine, you should be golden using this filter. Otherwise, use a little tap water if you run into problems.

I installed a three stage 4”x20” filtration system with a pre-stage sediment filter about 4 months ago. I replaced the originally supplied 4”x20” 1st stage sediment filter with this water softening filter and it seems to be working just fine. I am hoping it will last 6 months, we’re only about 1 month in and results are still good. I contemplated on installing a water softener before the 3 stage filtration system and this just might solve that problem. Not only do we have VERY clean and great tasting water, but the hardness is reduced slightly with this filter.

Even though this cartridge didn't serve my purposes I'll still rate it 5 stars. Simply because it seems to perform the way as advertised. I thought I'd roll the dice to see if it would perform at an extended level[shower/laundry] Unfortunately [for me] it is limited, but seems to perform well to single point of use applications! Great cartridge for proper specified use!

Filter came in a sealed heavy plastic bag, and already had an odor that exuded from it. Opening the bag was worse and made it difficult to breath. Came with an MSDS sheet which I found interesting as I had never received one for other filters. Sheet basically says it is non-toxic. Inserted the filter into our system and flushed it, and the water stinks and has a disagreeable taste, making you not want to use it. Can smell it from the faucet, from flushing, in the shower, in the washer. Has lessened with use, but still there after a week. My family says it smells like mold. We have "bad" water which is why we filter, and it is almost worse than the unfiltered water from the tap. Will not purchase again.

I bought a 3 stage under the sink filter that uses the standard 10" filters, but replaced one of the filters with this softener for use with my espresso machine. My water isn't very hard, but enough to notice a difference at the bottom of the kettle if I use tap water. I replace this filter every 6 months and it works well to prevent scale issues, rather than having to fix it later.
