I've been using the water in the pot method for years. This takes half the time! Maybe even less. It's so fast! It does smoke initially, but it burns off pretty fast. The only down size is that it's pretty small. But I love the thermometer they sent, big numbers, easy to read! Sent a cooling pad, which the pot seems to stick to a bit, and a little spoon for stirring. I would buy again!I read thru so many reviews before buying this one. I just make wax melts for family, so this is great.

This candle making kit from CasaCulina is not really a candle making kit. It is a hot plate, a pot to melt wax in, and some wicks. You will still need to purchase the wax, dyes, jars, molds and all the other items needed to make candles. I'm a beginner, so I will give my thoughts on this kit from that standpoint. Some things I mention could very well be something that I did wrong or didn't do.To start off, I do like the large size of the wax melting pot, and how compact the hot plate is. They both seem solid and well made, and in my opinion should last for a bit. The thermometer and silicon pad seem to be pretty good as well. What I can make of the quality of this kit with my minimal knowledge, is that it all seems to be good quality items. Now, I'm sure there AR better items and there are items that are not as good. This kit seems to be a good start for beginners. Now, to go over my first candle attempt and how the hot plate and pot performed. This is a little tricky being new to this because I really don't know if it's good or bad, so I will let you decide. To start off, I put soy wax flakes into the melting pot, placed it on the hot plate and turned on the hot plate. The hot plate is controlled with a little dial that you turn until you get to the setting you want. As I started to turn the dial, I noticed it took a little turning before the #1 came into view as the first setting. The settings are 1-5, and I'm guessing that blank space you have to turn past to get to the #1 is some type of warm setting.By the way, let me mention that my kit came with no instructions on how to use. Since this was my first time using the hot plate and I had no idea how hot each setting gets, I just put it on #1 and figured I would start going up from there if needed. Well, there was no need to go higher than #1 and I actually had to turn the hot plate off for a bit. Once I set it to #1, it got hot fast and melted the wax quickly. Then I put the thermometer in to see if I was at the right temp to add my dye and fragrance. The temp read 190°F and claimed to over 200 fast. Again, I don't know much about candle making but I figured that was much more heat that needed, so I had to turn th hot plate off. It took a good 8-10 min for the temp to get down to 180F and then another 5-10 min for it to get down to 140F and then that's when I poured the wax into my mold.I'm guessing this hot plate is made for camping or boiling water, or something like that. I don't think it was made specifically to melt candle wax, so just make sure to keep an eye on the wax your melting. I have read that the wax can catch fire if it gets to hot, but maybe that's only if open flame touches it. Either way, this hot plate gets hot fast and can possibly cause some serious problems for you.Overall, again, I don't know if the heat speed and temp is good or bad for candle making. I do know it's much faster than doing the double boiler technique, but you have t really keep an eye on the wax. If your someone who is impatient, this could be a good kit for you. If your someone who gets distracted or doesn't keep focused, you may want to skip this kit.

I just started candle making. This was super easy to learn and thermometer gives accurate readings which is so important. For the price with the entire kit really is great. The pitcher is a tad bit on the smaller side but it functions perfectly for making a few candles.
