I recently got the Big Blackfoot Fly Fishing Reel from Kingfisher Fly Fishing, and I couldn’t be more impressed with its performance. As an avid fly fisher, I’ve used my fair share of reels, and this one has definitely stood out. Here’s my review:Durable Construction:The CNC-machined 6061-T6 aluminum alloy used in this reel makes it incredibly tough and corrosion-resistant. I’ve fished in both saltwater and freshwater environments, and this reel has held up beautifully. Even after exposure to the elements, it looks as good as new with no signs of wear or corrosion. The durability is top-notch, making it perfect for any fishing environment, whether I’m out in the sun or dealing with wet conditions.Lightweight Design:One of the standout features of this reel is its lightweight design. The larger CNC hollow construction keeps the weight down, which is crucial for long days on the water. My arm feels less fatigued, even after hours of casting and reeling in fish. It’s noticeably lighter than many other reels I’ve used, yet it doesn’t sacrifice strength or performance, which is a huge plus.Smooth Operation:The 2+1 ball bearings and 1:1 gear ratio provide an incredibly smooth retrieval. What really stands out to me is the one-way roller bearing that engages the drag system so precisely. Whether I'm reeling in a trout or a larger fish, the drag feels incredibly smooth and reliable. It’s an excellent balance of performance and reliability, ensuring that I don’t lose a catch due to mechanical failure.Precise Drag System:This reel’s drag system is second to none. This is a nice strong reel. It is built very solid and has a bit of weight to it. It moves smooth and makes for easy reeling and casting.

✍️ I'm a beginner at fly fishing. I ordered this gunsmoke 5/6 weight fly fishing reel. I'm very happy with it. The construction is solid. The CNC machined aluminum alloy is very sturdy. It's gunsmoke paint job is shiny and well done with a gray green tint. The part that attaches to the rod got scratched easily for me. It's not a big deal since you can't see the scratch marks once the reel is installed on a rod. I paired this reel with a 9' rod and with WF5F fly fishing line. I'm happy with it's performance. I was able to load fishing line very easily. The handle retrieves fishing line smoothly. The drag on this reel was simple and effective. I really liked how it came with a black reel bag. It's handy for storage purposes. Kingfisher also has videos about how to change the handles from left handed to right handed. I appreciated those videos even though I didn't need them. I'm super happy with this reel. TLDR: This is a spectacular large-arbor reel, well made, very well designed with great consideration to details, only the middling drag system betrays the value price.I've been familiar with KingFisher for a while now, having used some of their accessories in the past, and I've consistently been impressed with the quality of their gear. When this newer "Big Blackfoot" reel came up on Vine, I was excited to give it a try, and it continues to uphold the brand's reputation for delivering high-quality products at an accessible price point.The "Big Blackfoot" seems to be positioned as a strong contender in the "affordable premium" reel category. With its price and large-arbor design, the Big Blackfoot seems to be directly targeted at Reddington's Behemoth. This reel definitely delivers on the large-arbor feature and is a perfect choice for reducing line memory and increasing retrieval rates, all without adding unnecessary weight to the reel. This balance between size and weight is often tricky to achieve.The build quality is excellent, evidently made from machined aluminum with no signs of casting flash, unfinished machine marks, or rough edges. A considerable amount of care has gone into the finishing process.The reel features a fairly average drag system, and it's probably the only feature on the reel that tattles on the price. While it has decent clicky detents to hold the drag setting, the useful range is fairly narrow, with only a handful of clicks separating the "fully off" drag setting from "full on." The reel makes a satisfying clicky sound when the drag is working, but it reels in smoothly and silently with no resistance. I prefer this operation, but I know some people prefer the clicky feedback in both modes. The drag system is fine for trout fishers but probably inadequate for saltwater game fish or large bass.A particularly impressive feature is the reel seat attachment. Unlike many affordable reels (and some expensive reels), which often use square posts or direct attachments that can create angular pinch points that can damage your line, the Big Blackfoot uses two cylindrical posts. This design choice significantly reduces the risk of line damage (this also adds parts and manufacturing complexity; it is far from a thoughtless addition or a visual flourish). Additionally, the reel seat includes two rubberized pads that help create a secure, compression fit against the reel. This approach avoids the pitfalls of metal-to-metal contact, which can loosen over time, ensuring a more reliable and stable connection. Again, this attention to detail is often missing from far more premium reels.Overall, the KingFisher "Big Blackfoot" fly reel is a well-thought-out and precisely engineered product. It offers a level of quality and attention to detail that you'd expect from much higher-priced reels. I can't overstate what an absurdly great reel this is.
