It's not impossible to reflow or soler surface mount with conventional solder, but it certainly is harder, especially if you're going to use a heat gun or a wide solder tip. Solder paste is great. You lay down a bead over the component legs, apply heat, and the metal in the pads just sucks the solder to them in nice neat little beads. It's like magic.I like that they included copper desoldering tape as if you don't have an air station, it can be tricky to get something like a surface mount IC to detach. You lay this wick material over the legs and apply heat and flux, and it wicks the solder up into the mesh, leaving a solder free joint for removal.The price is right, and these are standard solder station components.
