This is my first NAS purchase, and I wish I'd done it sooner. I went with this Synology unit because they seem to have the most user-friendly management interface and a solid reputation. Roughly two months in, I'm quite happy with the purchase. I'm using it mainly as a Plex media server and family data backup for multiple PCs, phones, and Apple devices. I got sick of the monthly extortion cloud data fees from Apple (and their constant nagging about increasing my cloud plan), so I set this up so I could have more control over my data. Creating my own NAS also provided the added bonuses of saving money every month while being able to tell Apple, Google, and Microsoft to pound sand.Pro tip: you don't need to use "official" Synology hard drives in this thing; theirs cost literally twice as much as comparable drives from competitors. I have mine stuffed with 20TB WD Red Pro drives, and I haven't had any trouble with them at all. When I run out of space on this unit, I'll likely chain the expansion unit to this one and keep right on hoarding data.Recommended.

I recently purchased the Synology DiskStation DS923+ NAS, and I am thoroughly impressed by its performance and versatility. The model name itself holds significance: “DS” stands for DiskStation, “9” indicates that this 4-bay NAS can be expanded to 9 bays with a 5-bay expansion unit like the DX517, “23” represents the 2023 model year, and the “+” signifies enhanced features within its series.Setup and Configuration:The package came complete with four 4TB hard drives, a 1TB SSD, two LAN cables, a power cable, and the NAS unit itself—all in excellent condition. Setting it up was straightforward thanks to Synology’s user-friendly DiskStation Manager (DSM) operating system. Within minutes, I had the system running smoothly, and I found DSM’s features easy to navigate.Data Redundancy:One of the key highlights of this NAS is its ability to safeguard data against drive failures. I configured it using Synology Hybrid RAID (SHR), which allocates one disk for redundancy. This ensures that even if a single drive fails, all data remains safe and accessible.Performance and Features:The DS923+ delivers powerful data management capabilities. Sharing photos and documents across devices is seamless, and the NAS performs exceptionally well, even with multiple users. The 1TB SSD significantly improves read/write speeds, while the included 4TB hard drives offer ample storage. Additionally, the dual 1GbE LAN ports make network connectivity simple and reliable.Future Expansion:This NAS offers excellent scalability. While it comes with 4 drive bays, it supports expansion with a 5-bay DX517 unit, allowing a total of 9 drive bays. Alternatively, you can replace the existing hard drives with higher-capacity ones as your storage needs grow. Conclusion:The Synology DS923+ is a fantastic investment for both personal and professional use. Its ease of setup, robust features, and scalability make it a standout NAS solution. Whether you’re looking to back up data, share files, or manage media, this NAS is up to the task. Highly recommended for anyone seeking a reliable, future-proof storage solution!

I wanted to set up a media server that wouldn’t require my constant attention, and this NAS server fills that bill in spades. I can’t speak highly enough of how well it has been working over the past few months.
