I've owned and used an older model of this TNAS (an F4-210) for years and have been very pleased with it. So much so that I wanted to buy another one. Finding that the F4-210 was discontinued in favor of the F4-212 (this device), I ordered the "upgraded" version and four of the same make/model of hard drives. Easy, right? The F4-212 was underwhelming at best, frustrating to unusable at worst. The problem may be in the TNAS software (I'm using 4.2 on my existing TNAS, while this unit comes with 5.x installed). Setup was easy, the TNAS desktop app found the new device with no problem. Great start!I set up a RAID 5 that took overnight to initialize. Seems a bit long since the hard drives were only 4TB each, but I ignored it and assumed that TNAS 5.x inherently took longer. After a successful RAID 5 initialization, I set up a single pool and a single share (just to keep it simple at first). Over a day or so, I mapped drives from Windows 10 and 11 and the TNAS and mapping were working well. After a day or to, the admin page started taking longer than usual to appear in a browser (I tried Firefox, Edge, and Chrome - all would take 30 to 60 seconds for the admin page to load. Easy management tasks like SMART checks seem to take much longer than I was used to on my F4-210.Then, the admin page stopped responding completely. A power cycle didn't address this. I confirmed the new TNAS (F4-212) and an IP address on my network and was able to ping it, but no admin page in any browser. Hmmm.....Then, the mapped drives went offline. So: Slow at first, now no admin page and no drive mappings? So, I pulled the drives and sent the TNAS F4-212 back to Amazon (HUGE thank you to Amazon customer service!!!!). Why 2 stars? Well, maybe this incredibly slow response is normal. Maybe I should have waited longer than a minute for the admin page to load. Maybe.....So it kinda worked for a while, then seemed to go off into never-never land. I'd have given one star if it didn't fire up at all. I'll find an F4-210 used or get one directly from the TNAS site. The F4-210 works great! The "upgraded" F4-212? Not so much.

works well, setup is pretty painless... not the fastest with data transfer but that is to be expected

This nas was easy to set up and works well for me use case. I bought it to use as a backup for my desktop. I initially installed a single hard drive and set it as their traid format. Adding another drive was easy, but did take some time to rebuild. You can use this as a plex server if you want. The software on their app store is not the most recent, but you can install the newest version manually. I have not had trouble with videos up to 1080 when streaming from it. I have not tried 4k.The security camera software in their app store is in Beta testing so I would not recommend it as a nvr unless you just want a place to store constantly recording raw video. They have some work to do to add some features that you'd want in software for security cameras.Overall I believe this is a good nas for the money. It was pretty easy to set up even if there is not as much documentation on it compared to other manufacturers. Having a backup with a version of RAID really helps with my needs

I bought this to expand my plex server. The OS is a different version from my older TerraMaster NAS. This one was a nightmare to set. Taking hours to figure out how to create shared sub folders under a root shared folder. When the drives go to sleep, they no longer show as available and do not spin up. When I try setting them to not sleep, the primary drive is no longer bootable and just keeps making a seeking sound but nothing ever happens until you reinstall the OS. I have to restart the NAS to pick up the other 3 drives. These are brand new NAS 10gb 7200RPM drives. The older 2 drive version was up and running in minutes. Dunno why they would change to a more complicated way of doing things. The hardware upgrade on this is awesome however.
