I got this for my handicapped son because he loves tornadoes. My biggest complaint about this lamp is that it isn't sealed. It will spill if accidentally tipped over. Because of that I have to make sure I set it in a place in his room that he can't accidentally knock it over and make a mess. You do have to add water and the little balls to this lamp. Once assembled it is really fun to watch and it changes color which is nice. I just wish it was able to be sealed tightly so water would not spill if knocked over.

Got this for the man cave. It's cool to watch and does make a little bit of noise when in operation. My shop does get some sunlight in it so I am curious as to how long until some algae starts growing. Everyone loves it though.

This is an interesting toy. It does what the description says and looks similar to the photos, but the online photos are not an accurate representation of this vortex product. It's a very simple toy -- add water, add included tiny foam balls, cover with lid and plug into a USB input. In just a few seconds the water starts moving and very quickly adds the foam balls into the mix, creating the visual effect that looks surprisingly like a tornado in a jar. The look isn't as well defined as their photos show, but the base is thinner and gets slightly larger as it moves up. What I love about it is that the vortex appears to dance -- it's constantly changing size, swaying and swerving, dipping and rotating. It's all very fast and is quite entrancing. My big complaint is that it rotates thru several colors every few seconds and I'd much prefer to choose one color and leave it at that. But there's no option to change it, so the colors continue their rapid change. It's almost silent from a few feet away, and as you get closer there is a small hum. It doesn't bother me while reading or watching TV, buy I'd never keep it near my bed while sleeping -- that would drive me crazy and I don't know how easy it would be to fall asleep with the bright colors and the hum. But during my awake time, I love watching it move so hypnotically. It's a great interesting toy to space out to or just interest kids in how things work and happen. Be warned that the tiny foam balls seem electrically charged and stick to your finger or the lid like glue! They are seriously difficult to get off and back in the water!! I think it's a good distraction to veg out on and decompress with. It's not quite as cool as a Lava lamp but not too far behind. If you have some extra money for cool toys, I'd recommend you try this out as it is pretty cool. The price is a bit higher than I like, but then again I love watching this so it's worth it to me. I do appreciate groovy toys, lol!!
