If is made with heavy steel, but the welds are spot welds and extremely poor (see thru). Not impressed with this at all

This thing is far more sturdy than I expected. The wheels roll very smoothly and don't leave marks. It's fairly simple to set up even though mine didn't come with instructions. I'm using it on a mini lathe (Shop Fox W1704). The only reason I couldnt give it 5 stars is because the lock down lever gets in the way of the bottom arm. I found a work around and I'm sure if I were using a midi lathe it wouldn't be a problem. Just be aware of that if you're planning to use this with a small lathe.

This is made from laser-cut 1/4" steel plate and perfectly welded. All hardware is really heavy duty; so heavy that once this is attached to my Delta 46-460 lathe, I can lift the lathe using the steady rest as a handle and it does not deform. Obviously this is not the intended purpose of this steady rest, but it's a really good demonstration of just how rock solid and heavily made this unit is. It's easy to set up and the adjusting levers lock everything really tight so nothing moves. No instructions are included, so make sure the large washer goes on the screw first. The screw goes through the vertical upright support and threads into the roller arm as shown in the pics. The only plastic parts are the urethane tires on the sealed-bearing wheels, which have been sanded concentric with the axles. They roll true and smooth. The quality of materials and construction make the $80 price a no brainer. You will not be disappointed. I'm not.

I was hesitant to purchase this steady rest without any reviews. I decided to take a chance since the smaller version was too small for my lathe (Jet 1840). But I’m very happy with the purchase. It’s very easy to setup and mount on my lathe. It’s infinitely adjustable. It keeps my work steady without the wheels leaving any marks on my pieces. It just works.
